On Monday, I met with Mariana Esponda’s Imagine Architecture Carleton University students to explore the future possibilities of the Gamman House on Cyr Ave. We were joined by Henry McCambridge from the ...Eastview Legion and Mike Bulthius from Ottawa Community Land Trust. There are so many creative ideas for this space, and I can’t wait to see what the students will present!
Tonight, I welcomed Karin Galldin of Goldblatt Partners (and part-time professor at uOttawa Common Law) and her students for a tour of City Hall. We had a great conversation about municipal law and how cities are tackling overlapping crises — from climate change to opioids to homelessness. Their thoughtful questions made it clear that many are eager to pursue municipal and planning law.
Big thanks to Mariana and Karin for bringing their students into these real-life conversations and for helping them connect their studies to our city. 🎓

Lundi, j’ai rencontré la cohorte d’architecture de Mariana Esponda à Carleton pour parler de l’avenir de la maison Gamman sur l’avenue Cyr. Henry McCambridge de la Legion et Mike Bulthius de OCTL étaient aussi de la rencontre. Les idées ne manquent pas pour cet espace et j’ai bien hâte de voir ce que les étudiant·e·s vont nous proposer!
Ce soir, j’ai eu le plaisir d’accueillir Karin Galldin de Goldblatt Partners (et prof à temps partiel à la faculté de droit civil de l’uOttawa) et ses étudiant·e·s pour une visite de l’Hôtel de ville. On a discuté du droit municipal et des multiples crises que les villes affrontent — changements climatiques, opioïdes, itinérance, etc. Leurs questions étaient excellentes et ça fait plaisir de voir que plusieurs veulent se diriger vers le droit municipal et de l’urbanisme.
Merci à Mariana et Karin d’ouvrir ces portes et de donner à leurs étudiant·e·s des expériences bien concrètes. 🎓

Beaucoup de gens m’ont parlé des travaux sur la rue St-Patrick qui touchent les cyclistes, piétons et automobilistes autour de la promenade Vanier et de Beechwood. Jeudi, j’ai rencontré l’équipe du projet et des résidents pour entendre leurs préoccupations.
J’ai fait les ...demandes suivantes :
1️⃣ Réduire la limite de vitesse sur la promenade Vanier de 50 km/h à 40 km/h. On a vu des voitures utiliser la voie de virage pour accélérer bien au-delà de 50 km/h.
2️⃣ Ça fait un moment que je discute avec notre équipe de transport d’une nouvelle traverse à l’intersection Charlevoix/promenade Vanier. J’ai demandé que ce soit accéléré vu le nombre de piétons qui traversent là ou qui utilisent ce détour pour éviter la promenade Vanier et St-Patrick. Ça aidera aussi à régler le point #1.
3️⃣ Enlever temporairement les bacs à fleurs pour améliorer la visibilité de ceux qui traversent Beechwood pour rejoindre le pont St-Patrick.
4️⃣ L’équipe du projet recommande à ceux qui doivent traverser à Beechwood pour aller vers le pont St-Patrick de le faire du côté Crichton, et non du côté de la promenade Vanier (voir photo ci-dessous).

Many people have reached out to me about the construction on St Patrick which is affecting cyclists, pedestrians and cars around Vanier Parkway and Beechwood. On Thursday, I met with the project team and residents to discuss their concerns.
I have requested the following:
1️⃣ ...Change the speed on Vanier Parkway from 50km to 40km. We witnessed cars using the turning lane as an acceleration lane that went beyond 50km.
2️⃣ I have been in discussions for a while with our transit team about getting an intersection at Charlevoix and VP. I have asked that this be accelerated given the number of pedestrians crossing here or using this area to avoid VP and St Patrick’s. This will also help with #1.
3️⃣ Temporary removal of those flower boxes so there are better sight lines for anyone crossing Beechwood to get onto St. Patrick’s bridge.
4️⃣ The project team is asking that if you have to cross at Beechwood to get onto St. Patrick, to use the Crichton side of the street, not the VP side of the street (I’ve attached a picture below).
